The ‘Christmas Library bag collection’ is a local community project aimed at helping mothers and children who are in staying in Perth women’s refuges over Christmas.
Last year 70 handmade library bags filled with small gifts were donated so that children would receive something on Christmas morning.
How to get involved?
Sign up to come along to the Sew for Life Studio on SUNDAY 22nd OCTOBER and volunteer your time to sew library bags. Pop over to the Google docs spreadsheet to allocate which session during the day you’d like to attend.
Oh no! I can’t make it!
Don’t worry, if you can’t make it but still want to support the project, we will happily take fabric donations or you can sew a couple of library bags at home and bring them to the studio before the end of October.
Here is a link to a pattern you can use. Melissa leaves out the wadding and shortens the handles but don’t feel limited by this pattern. Be as creative as you like ❤️ the only request is that there is lining to support the weight of the books.
I can’t sew, can I still help?
Absolutely! The organisers are also accepted donations to help fill the bags. Ideas for fillers include:
- Books – picture, activity, colouring, sticker
- Stationery items – pencils, textas, glue stick, ruler, scissors
- Small toy [cars, dolls, Lego/building bricks]
- Pad of paper
- Art and craft items
- Bouncy ball/Frisbee/jump rope
- Stickers
- Games, board games
- Deck of cards, UNO [or similar card games]
- Torch with batteries
- Figurines – dinosaurs, bugs
- Playdoh and cutters
- …and much more at your local $2 shop!
